The Times of South Africa is reporting that police captain Mervin Reddy, 39, was murdered today in the South African city of Pinetown (about 16km west of Durban).

Reddy is the third police officer killed in that country in less than ten days.

The Times said that Reddy, a captain in the Pinetown crime intelligence unit, was confronted by at least one suspect as he backed out of the driveway at his home at 06:20.

The Times said that Reddy’s gun and cell phone were stolen; South African East Coast Radio was reporting that the suspect fled the scene in Reddy’s car.

The Sowetan newspaper reports that Reddy is the 20th police officer killed this year in South Africa.
